42 inch cabinets 8 foot ceiling. 36 inch cabinets are recommended for rooms with 8 foot ceilings with no trim or trim up to 6 inches in height and 42 inch cabinets are preferable in rooms with 9 foot ceilings with no trim or trim. If the kitchen has a 9 foot ceiling the largest standard size wall cabinets 42 inches high are used. Instead you can use a small height crown molding and drop the cabinets 1 1 2 2 inches but you ll sacrifice the backsplash height. In kitchens with average height around 8 feet cabinets often extend to ceiling or meet with a small ceiling.
Also you would not be able to reach upper shelves requiring a stool which is not practical when you are in middle of preparing dinner. Here is an in progress photo of 42 inch cabinets in a small kitchen 10 x 12 with 8 foot ceilings. With rta or ready to assemble cabinets you would normally use tall 42 inch wall cabinets leaving you with a 12 inch space between your cabinet tops and the ceiling. Yes the storage space is not much use for me but my husband can reach most of it and he does more cooking than i do.

I also did 42 inch uppers with an eight foot ceiling. 42 cabinets with 8 ceilings help with ceiling gap. Our ceiling is relatively level but we will still need to disguise the gap in a couple places.
When using 42 inch cabinets in an 8 foot ceiling there will be no room left for a crown molding. If you want double stacked cabinets you could then replace all your 42 inch tall cabinets with 36 inch tall cabinets with little 18 inch cabinets on top. 42 inch cabinets 8 foot ceiling would have to be order in custom sizes which is more expensive than standard cabinet sizes. Thanks for the feedback we are doing a new construction and wanting ten foot ceilings but don t know if the cost of uppers are worth it since they won t be used.
However if your kitchen has a high ceiling extending your cabinets to suit it can be realistic. You can either use 36 tall upper cabinets which allows for crown molding to be used along the top or you can use 42 tall upper cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling without any molding. I would not do it again but it works. We are trying to figure out if 42 inch cabinets look odd or floating on a ten foot ceiling.
